Field Squadrons

There are six field squadrons of the RAF Regiment and all are now located in the UK. 1 Sqn is based at RAF St Mawgan in Cornwall, 2 Sqn, the parachute capable squadron, is based at RAF Honington in Suffolk. 3 Sqn has a specialised role and is based at Aldergrove in Northern Ireland. 34 Sqn is located at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire, 51 Sqn has recently reformed at RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland and  63 Sqn, otherwise known as The Queen's Colour Squadron, is based at RAF Uxbridge in Middlesex.

The squadrons are equipped to broadly the same standard. Each is highly mobile, self contained and equipped with a range of weapons ranging from 81mm mortars to rifle launched grenades. With significant numbers of specialist surveillance devices and night vision equipment.

Field Squadron ORBAT

3 x Rifle Flights (Similar to an Army Rifle Platoon) 3 x Sections of 8 Men plus Flt HQ. Each section is commanded by a Corporal. Each Rifle Flight normally has two Senior NCOs and a Junior Officer in command.

1 x Support Weapons Flight (81mm Mortars)

1 x HQ Flight (Command and Control, MT, Supply, Admin and Signals Section)

Assets

4 x 81mm Mortars    24 x General Purpose Machine Guns (9 x SF)    4 x 51mm Mortar    94mm Light Anti-Tank Weapons    3 x Sniper Rifle    Light Support Weapons x 2 per rifle section   

Surveillance and Target Acquisition

Spyglass Thermal Imagers    MSTAR (Mobile Surveillance and Target Acquisition Radar)     Common Weapon Sights  (Image Intensifiers)    Hand Held Laser Range Finders.

Transport

2 x Land Rovers per section

A selection of other vehicles including Trucks and Motorcycles.

The RAF Regiment Field Force also has a pool of  Saxon wheeled Armoured Personnel Carriers from which the Field Sqns can draw for operational purposes.
