RAF Regiment Overview

The RAF Regiment has many roles, its main tasks include the following:

The ground defence of RAF aircraft and bases. The RAF Regiment has six Field Squadrons, these are responsible for the defence of RAF installations from attack by enemy ground forces. One of the Field Squadrons, No 2 Squadron, has a parachute capability. 

One of the other six Field Squadrons has a dual role.  The Queens Colour Squadron or No 63 Squadron Royal Air Force Regiment, is currently based at RAF Uxbridge. The Squadron is unique within the RAF Regiment as it is also the Royal Air Force drill and ceremonial Squadron.

The RAF Regiment also has four Ground Based Air Defence Squadrons. These squadrons provide the ground based anti-aircraft defence for RAF assets. They are equipped with the BAe Rapier Field Standard C surface-to-air missile system. 

In addition to its formed units, the RAF Regiment provides specialist instructors at all of the RAF's training establishments. Many officers and NCOs are employed as trainers and advisors on RAF Stations and other specialist units. The NBC Regiment at RAF Honington comprises of approximately 25% RAF Regiment personnel.

Finally, individuals are involved in peace-keeping or monitoring duties with organisations such as the United Nations, exchanges with the Parachute Regiment, Royal Marines and other NATO forces and establishments. There are several RAF Regiment personnel serving with the Special Air Service Regiment.
